SANTA CRUZ
The enormous Santa Cruz Department, encompassing much of Bolivia’s ‘Oriente’ (or vast eastern tropical lowlands), is a land of beautiful, lush landscapes. Its capital city, Santa Cruz de la Sierra (with 950 thousand inhabitants now Bolivia’s largest city) is hot, sprawling and - outside the tiled colonial central streets - unexpectedly modern.
Santa Cruz city (437 m) lies on the threshold of one of the most fascinating regions of Bolivia: To the northeast are the beautiful Jesuit Missions and the impressive Noel Kemp Mercado National Park just 3 hours away is the incredible Amboró National Park.

POTOSI
Having started life as a hamlet and miner’s camp, by the 16th century Potosi had become a major city, with a population of 160 thousand!
Within clear view of the city stands Sumaj Orkjo, the mountain of silver, first exploited in 1441 and riddled with over 5000 tunnels! Thanks to its sliver mines, Potosi was - in its colonial-period heyday - one of the wealthiest cities on Earth.
Potosi (3,977 m) - considered the highest city in the world - maintains much of its historical charm, with many cobbled streets, carved balconies and 30-odd indo-barroque style churches.
Potosi has been declared Historic and Cultural Patrimony of Humanity by UNESCO.
