The Sunbeam Rapier Series II: A British classic with an American twist

Imagine this: it is 1958 and you walk into the local showroom. There it stands, the brand-new Sunbeam Rapier Series II. With its characteristic rear fins and that recognizable two-tone paintwork, this was the epitome of British elegance and sportiness.

However, behind the Sunbeam Rapier Series II lies a story that goes much further than what might be apparent at first glance. For example, the iconic design of this car was heavily influenced by the legendary American designer Raymond Loewy.

The clean lines and characteristic rear fins were directly inspired by the Studebaker coupes of the era, giving the Rapier a progressive, almost transatlantic look that was unprecedented for a British family car at the time.

A small revolution took place under the hood. While the "Rally Master" engine often takes the spotlight, the block's true strength lay in the details: it was a direct evolution of the expertise the brand forged in the grueling world of international rallying.

The Series II was not just a 'facelift'; it was the car in which Sunbeam ruthlessly tackled the teething problems of the first series.

For instance, the vague steering was replaced by a modern recirculating ball system, giving the car razor-sharp handling that made it popular with sporty drivers.

The switch to floor-mounted gear shifting was no accident either. Whereas its predecessor had an awkward steering column gear shift, rally drivers demanded a lever that allowed for quick, precise changes.

This made the Rapier a formidable competitor in the Monte Carlo Rally, where it claimed prizes and definitively established its reputation as a "gentleman's racer."

The car is also quite exclusive. With a production run of around 15,000 units over a two-year period, the Series II was a rare sight.

Today, it is a sought-after classic, not only because of its appearance, but because it represents a unique era: the period in which the British reliability of the Rootes Group fused with the flamboyant flair of the space age.
