The reward Flemish design projects that positively impact our society. Out of hundreds of entries, the jury selected 3 winners within 9 categories that are prime examples of innovative and inspiring design.

maakleerplek is one of the laureates in the category . As commissioned by the stad Leuven, the team POLO - VanHout.Pro - Groep Infrabo gave a new, temporary, and circular interpretation to the Orshoven Mills.

Beginning of February, we will know if will receive a bronze, silver or gold award. The winner within each category will be announced during the festive awards ceremony and opening of the at on Tuesday 7 February 2023.

The development of our project - located on the former campus of the AZ Sint-Maarten hospital in - is advancing.

A new green and vibrant neighbourhood is being developed on the former site. The site of almost 10,000 m² accommodates a mixed program with hotel, apartments, houses, offices and retail space while providing a car-free collective garden which will become the meeting point of the neighbourhood. The project is taking care of the urban landscape while providing optimized living environment for its community, this is reflected through both volume and materiality, bringing architecture design, culture and nature together into a vivid image of good life in Mechelen.

The hotel and office are in finishing stages. Completion of the whole project is foreseen in 2023.⠀

Quadrivium - the new education and training building is an extension of the existing Arenberg Campus in Heverlee. The University of Leuven (KU Leuven) aims to realise a functional building providing a pleasant environment for students to study, relax and work. The jury valued POLO’s design because of its logical plan and its clear and transparent structure.

POLO designed a striking building with an obvious structure leaving space for a flexible interior design. The integration of a ‘backbone’ in combination with occasional widenings in the hallway creates informal meeting spaces. The project includes an auditorium with a capacity of 600 people, seminar rooms, collaboration rooms, practical training rooms, a dean’s office and a cafeteria with meeting facilities.

Early October, POLO attended the action day - Green Deal Circulair Bouwen (GDCB) - organised by Circular Flanders, OVAM, Vlaamse Confederatie Bouw and the Vlaamse overheidwith as central theme the role of the architect.

The afternoon was filled with various workshops and some circular project visits in Leuven, including a visit and tour of the Silo’s & Molens van Van Orshoven. Lieselot Vercampt – project leader POLO Interior Design - gave a guided tour and short presentation and guided tour on this experimental urban project realised in a circular and participative way.

POLO made the Silos & Molens Van Orshoven on the Vaartkom accessible, attractively furnished and fire-safe for temporary use as a makerspace. With the initiative, the city of Leuven is responding to the demand for space to launch projects where education, creativity and innovation meet.
