If you're familiar with our Intimacy Furniture, you know we deliberately opt for subtle aesthetics. Not just a stylistic choice, but a conscious strategy: to integrate s*x furniture into daily life without it being recognized as such.

A core principle in Nikita Aulov’s work is challenging and reshaping through design. “I take familiar shapes — often loaded with specific connotations — and pull them out of their original context to give new meaning or function. That confusion triggers emotional and cognitive responses, which serve as a design experiment: to explore the effects of subtle and explicit shapes, and to better understand how people react to sensitive topics. This opens up space for dialogue, shifts in perspective, occasional humor, and — both for myself and others.”

Take our 𝘊𝘩𝘢𝘪𝘴𝘦 𝘓𝘰𝘯𝘨𝘶𝘦, for instance: it looks like an ordinary lounge chair, but it’s also a thoughtfully designed, ergonomic s*x aid.

Or the 𝘗𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘦 𝘗𝘪𝘱𝘦: shaped like a weapon, but intended only for peaceful use. The pipe is designed to self-destruct if used for violence.

“I intentionally explore the tension between form and function. What happens when you place design on a scale — from extremely subtle to highly explicit? Where are the boundaries of what’s ‘acceptable’ or ‘shocking’? What kinds of reactions, connotations, or insights emerge from that? Can design help question — or positively reshape — societal thought patterns?”

What looks like a s*x toy… isn’t (seriously, don't use it!). The large one is decorative; the small ones are keychains.

Perfectly fitting within our themes of intimacy, symbolism, craftsmanship, and socially engaged design. Each piece was hand-turned on a lathe from local leftover wood.

And honestly, which s*x toy is more and than a бuttplug? Regardless of gender, origin, or disability… everyone has a бutt! 🙃

Every involved student, lecturer and expert who took part in the Design Sprint received one as a personal gift. A small token of appreciation for their remarkable motivation and involvement in the project.

As part of our R&D project ‘(𝗦*𝘅𝘂𝗮𝗹) 𝗘𝗿𝗴𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗩𝗥 – 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗰𝘆’, our startup Atorix Design engaged in a unique collaboration with Hogeschool PXL (UD Living Lab) and Universiteit Hasselt.

This cross-disciplinary Design Sprint ( ) brought together students from the fields of Occupational Therapy, Interior Architecture, and Architecture, who worked around the research question:
𝘏𝘰𝘸 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘢𝘥𝘥-𝘰𝘯𝘴 (𝘰𝘳 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘳𝘺 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘥𝘶𝘤𝘵𝘴) 𝘦𝘯𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘊𝘩𝘢𝘪𝘴𝘦 𝘓𝘰𝘯𝘨𝘶𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘪𝘮𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘷𝘦 𝘥𝘢𝘪𝘭𝘺 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘵 𝘢𝘯𝘥/𝘰𝘳 𝘴𝘶𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘱𝘭𝘦𝘴?

The aim of this project is to take the functionality of our Intimacy Furniture to the next level, and to support new, specific target groups facing mobility challenges in (s*xual) autonomy.

After a deep dive into the world of , intimacy, and (s*xual) ergonomics, the students began researching the target audience and refining the core problem. We applied the methodology throughout the sprint.

To bring their ideas to life, they used technology, which enabled them to efficiently develop digital prototypes, simulate s*xual positions and activities using anatomically correct bodies, and validate dimensions at 1:1 scale.

✨ It was a first for us to open up our design method and philosophy — including our VR-based workflow — to external participants. Despite the novelty of this approach, the process ran remarkably smoothly. The students quickly embraced the method, showed strong motivation, and handled the topic of intimacy with impressive maturity and respect — resulting in innovative solutions.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝘄𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗲?
✅ Tangible, manufacturable concepts: multifunctional add-ons enabling new forms of intimate experience for individuals and couples. Special attention was paid to specific types of impairments, such as asymmetrical mobility.

✅ Innovative thinking around modularity and adaptability, helping the Chaise Longue support a wider range of intimate scenarios — beyond traditional notions of penetrative s*x.

💡 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁?
We’re currently evaluating the presented concepts. Selected ideas will be further developed and tested in the next stages of the project.
Meanwhile, pilot couples are testing Chaise Longue (prototype V2) in real-life, household settings and offering us invaluable feedback.

🎓 Hogeschool PXL - PXL-Research - UD Living Lab - UHasselt - Faculteit Architectuur en Kunst

Vandaag in de krant: "Studenten gebruiken VR-bril om sekszetel voor mensen met beperking nog functioneler te maken."

Tijdens een cross-disciplinaire Design Sprint (UD2Care) onderzochten en implementeerden studenten uit drie vakgebieden – Ergotherapie, Interieurarchitectuur en Architectuur – VR-technologie om innovatieve oplossingen te ontwerpen voor ons toegankelijke intimiteitsmeubilair. Een samenwerking tussen onze startup Atorix Design, UD Living Lab (PXL) en Universiteit Hasselt.

“Naast het mooie ontwerp is het meubel ook erg praktisch. Het wordt op maat gemaakt, zodat rolstoelgebruikers en senioren gemakkelijk hun transfer kunnen doen of opstaan. Er zijn ook houten relingen voor extra steun en de diverse zachte kussens ondersteunen verschillende standjes. De volledige stoffering bestaat uit hoezen, en deze zijn allemaal wasbaar of vervangbaar bij eventuele slijtage.”

“Aulov heeft bewust gekozen voor warme materialen, zoals hout, omdat die comfortabeler aanvoelen dan koude, medische materialen zoals metaal. Hij wil dat mensen zich op hun gemak voelen tijdens het gebruik van het meubel. Het meubel wordt thuis geleverd en geplaatst bij cliënteel in België en Nederland.”

Inclusive furniture with a subtle and 3rotic touch, developed using 3D modeling in and Digital Prototype Testing; these are some of the core practices we apply to pursue (social) innovation in the furniture industry. We implement these techniques in the design of the furniture itself, testing (s*xual) ergonomics, as well as developing cradle-to-cradle upholstery techniques. Groot nieuws: onze startup is officieel gelanceerd!

Onze missie? Jouw intimiteitsbeleving comfortabeler, spannender en intiemer maken. 🙂

Dit doen we door esthetische interieurobjecten te ontwikkelen met een opmerkelijke, maar verborgen multifunctionaliteit als ergonomisch s*ksmeubilair. Met een sterk oog voor inclusie en duurzaamheid, gaan we deze uitdaging met volle passie en toewijding tegemoet.

Sinds kort zijn we ook aangesloten bij de Vlaamse meubelfederatie Fedustria. We kijken alvast uit naar het verdere verloop van deze samenwerking.

Mooie stappen en een geleidelijke positieve evolutie!

Steeds vaker zien we zulke initiatieven in Belgische rusthuizen waarbij verwenproducten en speeltjes worden gedemonstreerd. De aanwezigheid van een s€ksuologe voegt hier een sterke meerwaarde aan toe. Het goede nieuws is dat dit niet altijd pure commerciële acties zijn van de verkopers zelf; vaak zijn het medewerkers of bestuursleden die zelf het initiatief nemen.

De reacties van senioren zijn uiteenlopend, net zo divers als bij een jonger doelpubliek. Deze variëren van gniffelen en verbazing tot afkeuring, en alles daartussenin.

Het belangrijkste is dat er progressieve rusthuizen zijn die wel degelijk belang hechten aan dit aspect van de (mentale) gezondheid, dat er geïnformeerd wordt (ook op luchtige wijze), en dat de dialoog erover geopend én gefaciliteerd wordt. 🙂
