TENSE PHONE CALL: Trump vs. Netanyahu
📞 "Hair on Fire" – Inside the tense Trump-Netanyahu call. The US wants a diplomatic deal, but Israel wants to resume strikes immediately to destroy Iran's nuclear program.
Detailed News Report
Washington/Tel Aviv, May 21 — A "prolonged and dramatic" phone call between US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has exposed deep strategic rifts over the future of the Iran war, according to multiple US and Israeli media reports .
Described by a source familiar with the conversation as deeply alarming for the Israeli leader, Netanyahu's "hair was on fire" following the exchange, Axios reported, citing a US official briefed on the call .
The Core Disagreement
The hour-long conversation revealed two fundamentally opposing views on how to proceed:
· Netanyahu's Position: The Israeli Prime Minister is reportedly "deeply skeptical" of the ongoing negotiations and called Trump's delay in strikes on Iran "a mistake." He is aggressively pushing for the resumption of military action to further degrade Iran's military capabilities and weaken the regime by destroying its critical infrastructure .
· Trump's Position: The US President continues to favor a diplomatic off-ramp. Trump reportedly told Netanyahu that mediators were drafting a "letter of intent" that both Washington and Tehran would sign to formally end the conflict. This would trigger a 30-day negotiating period focused on Iran's nuclear program and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz .
'On the Borderline'
Despite his openness to a deal, Trump has not ruled out military force. Speaking at the Coast Guard Academy, he stated: "The only question is, do we go and finish it up, or are they gonna be signing a document. Let's see what happens."
Later, he described the situation as "right on the borderline" between a deal and a return to full-scale war, adding: "If we don't get the right answers, it goes very quickly. We're all ready to go." Trump also asserted that Netanyahu "will do whatever I want him to do" regarding Iran, while emphasizing they share a good relationship .
Failed Diplomacy and Sticking Points
Compounding the tensions, a senior Iranian source told Reuters that no deal has been reached with the US, although gaps have narrowed. The primary sticking points remain Iran's uranium enrichment program and Tehran's control over the strategic Strait of Hormuz — a chokepoint for nearly 20% of global oil supply .
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Thursday described negotiations as showing "good signs" but warned that a proposed Iranian tolling system in the Strait of Hormuz would make a diplomatic agreement "unfeasible" .
