The Humanitarian Crisis of Undemocratic Rule

A lack of democracy is fundamentally a humanitarian crisis because it directly undermines human rights, fuels violence, and destabilizes societies. The recent events in Bangladesh vividly illustrate this. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's resignation and the subsequent chaos underscore the severe consequences of an undemocratic regime.

When a government operates without democratic constraints, it often resorts to authoritarian measures to maintain power, as seen in Bangladesh. The government’s violent response to protests—resulting in over 440 deaths and widespread brutality—demonstrates how the absence of democratic mechanisms leads to human suffering. In a democracy, dissent can be expressed through legal channels and addressed through dialogue. However, under an autocratic regime, dissent is frequently met with repression and violence, depriving individuals of their basic rights and safety.

The brutality of the state forces, including the use of live ammunition against unarmed protesters, reflects a disregard for human life and dignity. This kind of violence not only results in immediate physical harm but also inflicts long-term psychological and social trauma on communities. It creates an environment where fear and oppression replace freedom and justice, further exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.

Furthermore, the economic instability that follows political turmoil is a significant humanitarian concern. In Bangladesh, the economic disruption caused by the unrest, including inflation and unemployment, affects millions of ordinary people. Economic hardship often exacerbates poverty, limits access to essential services, and increases vulnerability, thereby deepening the humanitarian crisis.

The lack of democratic governance also means that accountability is compromised. In the absence of democratic institutions, those responsible for human rights abuses and political violence are rarely held accountable. This impunity perpetuates a cycle of violence and abuse, leaving victims without justice and further eroding trust in governance.

In summary, a lack of democracy precipitates a humanitarian crisis by enabling violence against civilians, destabilizing economies, and undermining the mechanisms of justice. The situation in Bangladesh vividly illustrates how the absence of democratic values leads to severe human suffering and instability, highlighting the urgent need for genuine democratic reforms to restore peace, justice, and stability.

সমাজের এই বদ্ধমূল ধারণাকে ভ্রান্ত প্রমাণ করে সাদাকালো ৬৪ খোপে ১৬ ঘুঁটি দ্বারা নিজের বুদ্ধিমত্তা ও বিচক্ষণতার পরিচয় দিয়েছে বাংলাদেশের এক তরুণী নোশিন আনজুম।

‘দাবা’ শব্দটির সাথে সাথে কল্পিত হয় গালে হাত, কপালে চিন্তার রেখা আর রাজাকে নিয়ে দুই পক্ষের বোঝাপড়া। তবে হাতি, ঘোড়া, সৈন্য নিয়ে রাজ্য সামাল দিয়ে কিস্তিমাত করতে চায় বুদ্ধির জপ্রসার ও বিস্তর চিন্তার ক্ষমতা। তেমনি নোশিন নিজের বুদ্ধির কারবারিতে দাবায় হাতেখড়ি দেওয়ানো তার বাবার রাজাকেও চেকমেট করে সামনে এগিয়ে চলেছে। নোশিন ২০১৮ সালে শ্রীলঙ্কায় অনুষ্ঠিত এশিয়ান স্কুল অব চেস চ্যাম্পিয়নশিপে ৫মিনিটের ব্লিটজ দাবায় লড়ে অর্জন করে নিজের প্রথম খেতাব ‘উইমেন ক্যান্ডিডেট মাস্টার’। এরপর ২০১৯ সালে ঢাকায় অনুষ্ঠিত ‘এশিয়ান জোনাল চেস চ্যাম্পিয়নশিপ, জোন ৩.২’ টুর্নামেন্টটিতে বাংলাদেশের কিংবদন্তি দাবাড়ু উইমেন ইন্টারন্যাশনাল মাস্টার রানী হামিদকে হারিয়ে অর্জন করে ‘উইমেন ফিদে মাস্টার’ খেতাব। ২০২২ সালে বাংলাদেশ দাবা ফেডারেশন কর্তৃক আয়োজিত বঙ্গমাতা ফজিলাতুন্নেছা মুজিব ৪১তম জাতীয় মহিলা দাবা চ্যাম্পিয়নশিপে নোশিন হয় অপরাজিত চ্যাম্পিয়ন। সর্বশেষ ২৯ মে ওয়ালটন ৪২ তম জাতীয় মহিলা দাবা চ্যাম্পিয়নশিপ ২০২৪-এ নোশিন আনজুম চ্যাম্পিয়ন হয়ে সগৌরবে অর্জন 'ফিদে মাস্টার' খেতাব।

২১০৩ রেটিংধারী এই দাবাড়ুর চোখে শুধু উইমেন গ্র্যান্ডমাস্টার নয়, গ্র্যান্ডমাস্টার হওয়ার স্বপ্ন। বাবা-মার অনুপ্রেরণা ও নিজের কঠিন পরিশ্রম দিয়ে দাবায় মেয়েদের বিভাগের দৈন্যদশাকে দূর করে বাংলাদেশকে আরও এগিয়ে নিয়ে যাওয়ার স্বপ্ন বাস্তবায়ন করতে চায় আত্মবিশ্বাসী এই তরুণী।
