Government Leaders and CIPRB–RNLI Advance Sustainability Dialogue on SeaSafe Lifeguard Services in Cox’s Bazar

The Honorable Sheikh Bashir Uddin, Advisor to the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism (MOCAT), Ministry of Commerce, and Ministry of Textiles and Jute, alongside Nasrin Jahan, Secretary, MOCAT, and Mohammad Salahuddin, Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Cox’s Bazar, convened a high-level discussion with the major stakeholders of Cox's Bazar.

Representing CIPRB, Prof. Dr. AKM Fazlur Rahman, Executive Director, Dr. Saikhul Islam Helal, Senior Advisor - Govt. Liaison, Dr. Yeasir Iftekhar, Project Manager, SeaSafe and Imteaz Ahmed, Field Team Manager, SeaSafe and representing RNLI, Senior International Programmes Manager, Darren Williams were present at the discussion.

CIPRB presented on the critical situation arising from the scheduled closure of lifeguard services at the end of September, due to conclusion of International donor project funding.

The presentation highlighted:
-The imminent drowning risks associated with discontinuing the lifeguard services.
-The economic importance and tourism impact of lifeguard service in Cox’s Bazar.
-A sustainability roadmap, including proposals for government-led intervention and co-financing through contributions from tourism sector stakeholders such as hotels, motels, and resorts.

Discussing the importance of the lifeguard services as a priority for tourism and public safety, the Honorable Advisor instructed the Deputy Commissioner of Cox’s Bazar to convene an urgent stakeholder meeting to develop actionable strategies and chart a long-term sustainability plan.

This dialogue marks a significant policy step towards building a sustainable, locally-owned lifeguard service model that protects lives while strengthening the future of Cox’s Bazar as a premier global tourist destination.
