​Welcome to the first lecture of our series. Today, we begin at the very foundation of our discipline: the philosophy of design.
​Many aspiring designers fall into the trap of believing that interior design is merely the art of decoration—of choosing curtains, matching cushions, or selecting paint colours. While aesthetics are undeniably important, they are but the surface of a much deeper objective.

​Why do we design?

At its core, interior design is an exercise in human-centric problem solving. We do not design merely to create a "pretty" space; we design to improve the quality of human life within an enclosure. Whether it is an office, a residence, or a public institution, our work influences how people think, work, rest, and interact.

​Consider the following perspective as you begin your studies:
​Functionality precedes Form: A space that looks exquisite but fails to facilitate the daily activities of its users is, by definition, a failed design.

​Psychological Impact: Every architectural choice—from the ceiling height to the flow of movement—alters the psychological state of the occupant.

​The Designer as an Architect of Experience: Our responsibility is to curate an environment that promotes well-being, efficiency, and clarity of mind.
