𝐌𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐟𝐚 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐰𝐚𝐫: 𝐋𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐜𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐁𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐡’𝐬 𝐂𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐀𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭

We mourn the loss of Mustafa Monwar, a foundational cultural architect and visionary patriot who passed away in his 90s. Renowned affectionately as the "Puppet Man," Monwar dedicated his life to shaping the nation’s cultural identity, arts infrastructure and early childhood development.

His lifelong devotion began as a ninth-grade student when he braved imprisonment for creating protest art during the 1952 Language Movement. Decades later, he served as a co-architect of the iconic "Red Sun" design at the Central Shaheed Minar and acted as a wartime beacon of hope during the 1971 Liberation War, staging puppet shows in refugee camps to bring joy to traumatized children.

As the pioneer of Bangladeshi puppetry, Mustafa Monwar elevated the medium into a respected cultural art form dedicated to early childhood education. He masterminded BTV’s legendary talent program Notun Kuri, taught empathy through his beloved puppet creation Parul on Moner Kotha, and was instrumental in developing UNICEF’s internationally acclaimed character Meena, which dramatically advanced girls' education, health and sanitation awareness across South Asia.

Beyond his creative endeavors, he shaped the nation's arts infrastructure through senior leadership roles at the Shilpakala Academy, Shishu Academy, BTV and BFDC. In 2004, Bangladesh honored his unmatched brilliance and creative patriotism with the prestigious Ekushey Padak. Mustafa Monwar leaves behind an immeasurable legacy woven into the very fabric of our national identity. May he rest in peace.
