In Search of a Forgotten Truth: Our Hijri Calendar
We measure time, count months, and plan our years every day. But have we ever paused to think - how accurate is the Hijri calendar we use? This is not a minor error; rather, it is a reality that has been unknowingly distorted for nearly 1,400 years.
This discussion is not emotional - it is an inquiry. An attempt to find an answer to the question: Have we truly understood the calculation of time according to the Qur’anic guidance?
The Qur’anic Principle: No Contradiction
First, a fundamental premise must be established. Allah says:
“Do they not reflect on the Qur’an? If it had been from anyone other than Allah, they would have found in it much inconsistency.”
(Surah An-Nisa 4:82)
This verse gives us a clear principle - there is no contradiction in the Qur’an. Therefore, if we find inconsistencies in our system, the error lies not in the Qur’an but in our understanding.
The Calculation of Time: A Synthesis of Sun and Moon
The Qur’an does not prescribe a one-sided method for determining time. Rather, it instructs us to use both the sun and the moon.
“It is He who made the sun a shining light and the moon a luminous light, and determined for it stations (manazil), so that you may know the number of years and the calculation of time.”
(Surah Yunus 10:5)
The key word here is manāzil (مَنَازِل) - stations. This does not merely refer to the visible phases of the moon, but to its position and trajectory in the sky. That means:
- The sun > determines the year
- The moon > determines the month
- Their integration > completes the time cycle
But in practice, what have we done? We have completely disregarded the sun.
The Mystery of 12 Months
“Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve months, in the register of Allah on the day He created the heavens and the earth.”
(Surah At-Tawbah 9:36)
Why 12? Why not 11 or 13?
Because a solar year accommodates a maximum of 12 lunar months. This number itself indicates the relationship between the sun and the moon. It is a balance - a synthesis of both systems.
The Lost Intercalary (Leap) Month
Almost all ancient civilizations solved a common problem:
- Lunar year ≈ 354 days
- Solar year ≈ 365 days
- Difference ≈ 11 days per year
Over time, this 11‑day gap accumulates, and in about three years it becomes roughly one month. So they would add an extra month (a leap month) to keep the months fixed to the seasons. The Jewish, Chinese, and even pre‑Islamic Arabs used this method. The question is: why did we abandon it?
The Names of the Months Are Proof. Look at the names of the Hijri months:
- Rabi‘ (ربيع) > Spring
- Jumada (جمادى) > Dryness / aridity
- Sha‘ban (شعبان) > Spreading out in search of water
- Ramadan (رمضان) > Intense heat
The root of Ramadan* is ر-م-ض (r-m-ḍ), meaning: stones becoming intensely hot from the sun’s heat.
Now the question: If Ramadan sometimes falls in winter, why is it named “heat”?
These names clearly prove that the months were once tied to specific seasons.
A Historical Proof: The Battle of Tabuk
“They said, ‘Do not go out in this heat.’ Say, ‘The fire of Hell is more intense in heat.’”
(Surah At-Tawbah 9:81)
This event took place in the month of Rajab. If the calendar were correct, Rajab should fall in the hot season. But according to the modern (non‑intercalated) calculation, it falls closer to winter. Here we see an inconsistency - which, in light of verse 4:82, compels us to rethink.
The Misinterpretation of the “Nasī’” Verse
“Nasī’ (postponement) increases disbelief… They make it lawful one year and unlawful another year…”
(Surah At-Tawbah 9:37)
The key word nasī’ (نَسِيء) comes from the root ن-س-أ, meaning to delay or postpone.
This verse nowhere forbids adding a leap month. Rather, it forbids arbitrarily shifting the sacred months - breaking the rules for convenience, not for correcting the calendar. Later, however, this was misinterpreted to abolish the leap month entirely.
The Current Reality: An Ineffective Calendar
Today’s Hijri calendar:
- Shifts backward by 11 days each year
- Has no relation to the seasons
- Makes long‑term planning nearly impossible
- Ramadan sometimes falls in summer with 16–20 hour fasts, sometimes in winter with 8–10 hour fasts. Is this equitable?
The Qur’anic Principle: Ease, Not Hardship
“Allah desires ease for you, not hardship…”
(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:185)
If fasting sometimes becomes 20 hours and sometimes 8 hours - how does that align with this verse?
A Possible Solution: Ramadan Fixed to the Season
If we return to an intercalary (leap month) system:
- Ramadan would remain fixed in autumn (September–October)
- Day and night would be nearly equal
- Fasting duration ≈ 11–13 hours
- Almost equal experience across the globe
This presents a balanced, reasonable, and Qur’anically consistent picture.
Final Word: Returning to the Path of Truth
This discussion is not a final verdict - rather, it is opening a door. We may not be able to change the calendar overnight. But we can:
- Think
- Research
- Question
- Seek the truth
Because the Qur’an does not call us to blind following, but to be thoughtful people. And if we truly believe: “There is no inconsistency in it” (4:82), then we must have the courage to revisit and re‑understand wherever inconsistency appears.
