The line graph visualizes the global output of renewable energy from different resources from 1975 to 2020.

Overall, all forms of energy generation showed an upward trend throughout the years. While hydropower had contributed the most to the production of green energy globally, wind energy had seen the most recent expansion.

Starting at 1500 TWh, Hydro power was the top yielding source out of the four in 1975. While Hydro power generation increased modestly during the early years, the numbers increased significantly in the later years, from slightly above 2500 TWh in 2000 to approximately 4200 TWh in 2020, the highest figure seen in 45 years among all the sources. Between 1975 and 2005, the energy generated by wind power remained static at 0 TWh, whereas the energy produced by hydro power doubled from 1500 TWh to 3000 TWh. Over the next 15 years, wind power reached its peak value of 2500 TWh.

When it comes to solar power and other renewables, the energy yields were lower than those of hydro and wind. Both solar and other renewables generated virtually 0 TWh for the initial 25 years. However, from 2010 solar power showed a consistent increase, whereas other renewable showed modest increase from 1990 to 2015. Between 2015 and 2020, solar power generation increased from 100 TWh to a little under 500TWh. Generation from Other renewables showed a two-fold increase, from approximately 500 TWh to a little over 1000 TWh.

In terms of aggregate figures, a dramatic increase was visible beginning around 2000 which was preceded by a steady increase from approximately 1500 TWh in 1975 to slightly under 3000 TWh in 2000. By 2020, total renewable energy generation had reached the 7,500 TWh mark, a massive increase from the 3000 TWh figure of 2000.
