Today, we honor the students who gave everything to protect their right to speak Bengali.

Their courage became a movement. Their sacrifice is remembered every year as thousands walk barefoot to the Shaheed Minar before dawn, laying flowers in their memory.

UNESCO recognized this day in 1999, because every language is a world of its own, and every community deserves to be heard in the words closest to their heart.

With hundreds of languages at risk of disappearing, this day belongs to all of us.
