The importance of garage design in a multi-storeyed building goes far beyond parking. It shapes the first and last impression of the entire architecture.

A thoughtfully designed garage is not merely a service space; it is the building’s threshold. In high-density urban contexts, especially in multi-storeyed residential or mixed-use buildings, the garage often becomes the primary point of arrival. Therefore, its spatial quality, lighting, ventilation, circulation clarity, and material treatment significantly influence user experience.

We had the privilege of designing a Memorial Landscape at the former Darbar Hall premises of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), Pilkhana, Dhaka.

The project commemorates the martyrs of the Bangladesh Rifles Revolt 2009, preserving their memory through the engraving of their names on natural marble walls—standing as the last memoirs of the historic Darbar Hall.

At the heart of the space lies a central altar for wreath laying, created as a place where tribute can be offered to those who sacrificed their lives in service of the nation.

The memorial landscape was conceived as a quiet and contemplative environment, where nature, light, and spatial composition come together to honor sacrifice, resilience, and national memory.

More than a physical space, the memorial aspires to remain a place of reflection, remembrance, and collective respect for the fallen heroes.

We’re pleased to share our participatory entry in the 𝐎𝐩𝐞𝐧 𝐀𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 for the Ten-Storied Academic Building of 𝐃𝐡𝐚𝐤𝐚 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐌𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐥 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐠𝐞 (𝗗𝗥𝗠𝗖), Mohammadpur—organized by the Institute of Architects Bangladesh (𝗜𝗔𝗕).

𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐍𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞:
The overarching metaphor guiding the design is তপোবন —a contemporary reimagining of a 𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭 where learning, discipline, and nature historically coexisted. Within Dhaka’s dense and congested urban fabric, the school is envisioned as 𝐚 𝐬𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬 𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲. The proposed campus aims to become one of the city’s most 𝐯𝐢𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐞𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬, offering children a space that stimulates intellectual growth while fostering 𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬. Through integrated landscapes, 𝐥𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐬, and nature-oriented spatial experiences, the design seeks to create an everyday 𝐞𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐬 beyond the formal curriculum. Ultimately, the school aspires to nurture 𝐞𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐳𝐞𝐧𝐬, strengthen community bonds, and establish a forward-looking model for resilient, nature-integrated educational architecture in Dhaka.

Competitions like this push us to question conventions, refine our thinking, and engage deeply with architecture’s civic role.
