The elitist rubbish has to stop!

You don’t need a degree to write poetry.

It’s not about whether you’ve got the ‘skill’ or how you follow the ‘rules’.

Poetry is a form of self expression that can be learnt if you foster your own true voice.

In Empowered Beginnings you’ll:

🔥Write and edit at least 15 new poems

🔥Explore your poetic influences and how they impact your writing. Let go of anything holding you back and embrace your new life as an empowered poet.

🔥Connect to ideas that authentically align with what inspires you.

🔥Re-think what you know. Did you learn about poetic devices at school? Did it intimidate you? Well, forget that because we are empowered poets here. Prepare to connect with poetic devices in a new way.

🔥Get inquisitive and try some new poetic forms, I dare you!

🔥Play with stanza & line structure. Be as creative as you want, edit your own poems and learn the techniques to shape your work.

🔥Learn to edit and improve. Never trust a first draft, a little (or big) edit will always improve your poem.

🔥Determine how to make the most of what you've learned by establishing a regular writing routine.

I’m Melissa Watts and with a PhD in creative writing I know a lot about the elitist rubbish (I actually stopped writing for a decade, but that’s a longer story). I’m a published poet (Small Towns, 2021), poetry judge and experienced teacher. You can find out more on the Nine Cups website.

Registrations close soon for poetry circles!

How it works:
🔥 Each Monday upload up to 60 lines of poetry that you would like feedback on.

🔥 You will automatically be assigned three other poets to provide feedback to. This feedback will be required by the next Monday. (A micro-class on how to provide valuable feedback will be included. Beginners welcome)

🔥 At the end of the week you will upload another 60 lines, and receive feedback from the tutor and three other participants.

🔥 This practice continues throughout the term.

🔥🔥BONUS: Each week the tutor will upload a micro-class teaching key editing techniques to further improve your work. Topics will be based on what the tutor thinks will benefit the group the most but might include topics such as improving the use of imagery, expanding on symbolism or line endings.

This is what I do every time I'm blocked, either with poem edits, or writing poetry in general.

As poets we can get too much into our own heads. This tip serves as an anchor.

What are your thoughts?
