Impulsivity

We often think the cost of impulsivity is just the obvious mistake: the angry text, the extra drinks, the online shopping blow‑out. But the deeper cost is usually quieter and more painful. It shows up as shame the next morning, anxiety about money or health, and that sinking feeling of “Why did I do that again?” It can strain your closest relationships, erode trust at work, and chip away at your confidence to make good decisions.
Impulsivity isn’t about being lazy or broken. It’s a brain‑ and body‑based pattern that was often shaped by stress, trauma, or long‑term coping habits. That means it can also be retrained with the right tools.

When an urge hits, it can feel like you only have two options: give in or use sheer willpower to fight it. There’s a gentler, smarter third option: the 90‑second pause.
Here’s how it works:
Notice the urge (“I want to yell / spend / scroll / drink”).
Name it (“This is an urge, not an emergency”).
For just 90 seconds, do nothing with it. Focus on 10 slow breaths, feeling your feet on the floor, or looking around and naming five things you can see.
Most urges rise, peak, and then start to fall if you don’t automatically act on them. That tiny gap is where your freedom lives.

On paper, you look like you have it all together.
High‑achieving. Intelligent. Capable.
But what people don’t see is the other side: the impulsive spending, the sudden job changes, the intense relationships that burn fast, or the late‑night decisions you regret by morning. You’ve learned to mask it with performance and charm, so even you can start to doubt there’s a real issue.
Research suggests that higher IQ can sometimes hide impulsivity‑related difficulties in testing and day‑to‑day life, while the stress, shame and chaos are still very real.
If this feels uncomfortably familiar, you’re not broken and you’re not alone. There are evidence‑based, practical ways to work with your brain instead of against it.
Our online courses at Impulsivity are designed by clinicians, grounded in current research, and made for real life, not theory.
