The research is clear 📚 reading aloud is one of the most powerful things we can do for our children.

When we read with a child, we’re doing far more than sharing a story. We’re building the foundations for language, confidence, curiosity and a lifelong love of learning.

Decades of research shows that children who are read to regularly:

💛 Build stronger language skills
Hearing rich varied language in books exposes children to far more words than everyday conversation alone. This growing vocabulary helps them understand, communicate and make sense of the world.

💛 Develop early literacy skills long before they learn to read
Through stories, children learn how books work – that print carries meaning, that pages turn left to right, and that stories have a beginning, middle and end. These early understandings make learning to read feel familiar and exciting.

💛 Strengthen phonological awareness
Rhymes, rhythms and playful sounds help children hear the building blocks of language.

💛 Grow their comprehension and thinking skills
Talking together about a story, predicting what might happen, wondering how a character feels, and connecting events to real life helps children develop memory, problem-solving, and higher-order thinking.

💛 Experience connection, comfort and joy
Shared reading fosters calmness, closeness, and moments of joint attention. These warm interactions support a child's sense of security and belonging.

Most importantly, children who experience positive, engaging reading moments from a young age are more likely to develop a genuine love of books - something that matters even more than early literacy skills alone.

Over the last week, our centre has celebrated NAIDOC Week through the 50 Deadly Choices initiative, engaging children in meaningful experiences that celebrated Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, identity, and wellbeing.

Our little fishers had a great time exploring a water play experience, using pipe cleaners as colourful fish and creating their own fishing rods and hooks. This activity encouraged imagination, problem solving, fine motor development, and plenty of smiles as children eagerly caught and released their "fish" together.

Thank you to Stockland Living for donating plants to our garden. We appreciate your support in helping us grow our garden and work towards our sustainability goals.

Through exploring herbs and spices, children engage in rich sensory learning, develop descriptive language, make cultural connections, and investigate the natural world in a fun and meaningful way.

Art is a part of being at kindy, where children are encouraged to explore, imagine, and express themselves freely through creative experiences that support their learning and development.

Thank you to Andrew Wallace - LNP Federal Member for Fisher, a valued member of our community, for recently visiting our centre and spending time with the kindergarten children. The children enjoyed listening to the story he shared and chatting with him. Thank you for taking the time to connect with the children and contribute to their learning and sense of community.

As part of National Reconciliation Week, we have included a variety of meaningful experiences and learning opportunities in our program to help children develop an understanding of, appreciation for, and connection to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, histories and traditions.

We like to do sensory play here at Goodstart Nirimba, giving children opportunities to explore, create, and learn through hands on experiences. Sensory activities support creativity, problem solving, motor skills, and overall development while making learning fun and engaging.
