Within one week, my 4 year old daughter suddenly couldn’t hear anything we were saying. How did we know? Well, at first we thought she was tricking us (and sometimes she was 🤦🏼‍♀️) but then we quickly realised that she really couldn’t hear us. It was very obvious in the car when she couldn’t see my mouth. Cue the mum guilt! I mean, how long had she not been able to hear us, especially at school? How many times in that week had I gotten grumpy at her for not listening? So we made a quick appointment with our GP, who was AMAZING! She couldn’t see anything, so she made us an urgent appointment with Perth ENT who got us in within 3 days.Perth ENT was so awesome - they started with a hearing assessment with the audiologist (that you can see in the video) and then immediately followed that with the ENT appointment (so that he had the whole picture). The tympanometer showed very limited ear drum movement in both ears, the hearing assessment with the headphones showed hearing loss in both ears but the bone conduction hearing was all ok!A quick look from the ENT showed that there was significant fluid in the middle ear (meaning she was probably hearing a very muffled version of everything) and the fluid was a little turbid (cloudy - a sign that it could be a result of an infection). After one course of antibiotics, she was back to normal! I’ll follow this video up with a post about hearing and what this all means! But just quickly, from a speechie perspective, I wanted to just highlight two things:💥 If you have concerns about your child’s hearing, please get a referral NOW because you might end up on a waitlist💥 Any time that your child spends not being able to hear to their full capacity means their brain receiving only part of the incoming information which can result in speech and/or language delay. Feel free to ask questions below. Note: this video is designed to allay your fear of the unknown if your child is going for a hearing assessment. You could familiarise your child with some headphones at home. Feel free to show your child this video so they feel a little more prepared. 18/12/2022
