Hi friends, Flo here
New Year's Eve is a fun time for people but it can be a horrible night for many pets. Every year thousands of animals get lost after panicking during fireworks. So it is best to be prepared.
* Please keep your pet securely contained for the entire night – a fence may not be enough to keep a determined, panicking pet from escaping during fireworks. Scaling fences can also lead to serious injury for dogs. Ideally you should keep your pet inside, in a secure room where they can neither escape nor hurt themselves. It is important that you don’t tie up your dog at the collar, as in a moment of panic he or she could try to get away causing serious injury.
* Stay home with your pet, or if this is not possible, leave your pet with someone familiar who will be staying in on NYE.
* Create a safe place in the house where your dog can hear a radio or TV. Play calming or classical music. Leave on television and radio in different rooms to help mask the noise.
* Flashes of light and noise are scary to pets, so close all windows and blinds to help block out noise and light.
* make sure your pet has a current identification tag and that your microchip details are up to date
* Thoroughly exercise your dog before dusk to help tire them out,. Also, a walk before the fireworks allows your pet the opportunity to go to the toilet
* Before the fireworks and parties begin give your dogs their evening meal, a full tummy also makes them happy and more sleepy!
* Try an Anxiety Wrap or Thundershirt. These are a type of jacket that have a calming effect on many dogs. They may be used for dogs who are fearful of storms, fireworks and travel or general anxiety. The jacket applies a gentle but constant pressure on the dogs torso which has a calming effect on the over stimulated nervous system
* If you know your pet is especially anxious, it is advisable to speak to your vet regarding any medication you could give to help them stay calm. However, this should be a last resort and must only be undertaken after a professional consultation.
Happy New Year’s Eve friends!
