๐งช๐ฆ Isocyanuric Acid - The Chemical With 100 Names ๐งช๐ฆ
Isocyanuric Acid (commonly referred to as Cyanuric Acid or CNA) is a vital part of maintaining a healthy pool, particularly during the summer months. As its many pseudonym names suggest it has a primary role in protecting the chlorine from ultraviolet light (sunlight).
The chlorine produced by your salt water chlorinator is consumed by many things including algae, organic matter, bacteria, micro-organisms, etc. One of the largest chlorine consumers is UV light. A pool without adequate concentrations of isocyanuric acid will quickly consume it's available chlorine and can often result in algael and bacterial growth. The isocyanuric acid stabilises the chlorine in the water by reducing the UV consumption, hence it is most commonly known as 'stabiliser'.
Stabiliser itself is not consumed and can be diluted out. If you've had a lot of rain or have filled up your pool recently it may be time to do a water analysis.
