Work Away Box

We spend a lot of time thinking about what goes into these boxes and why.
Making sure everything earns its place. Making sure it actually makes sense for the lifestyle rather than just looking good in a photo.
But the honest truth is that none of that matters as much as what happens when it arrives. The message that comes through from someone on site saying it showed up at exactly the right time. The partner at home who finally feels like someone understood what she needed to hear. The woman on site who said it was the first time something out there actually felt like it was made for her. The HR manager who says their team is still talking about it weeks later.
Those are the moments that remind us why this exists.
If you’ve received one and want to share how it landed we’d love to hear from you. DM us or leave a review.

The best FIFO organisations don't just manage the roster. They understand the life that surrounds it.
The safety systems, the wellbeing programs, the culture initiatives. The industry has come a long way in recognising that its people are its greatest asset and that investment shows.
The question that the most progressive organisations are starting to ask goes one step further though.
Are we supporting the lifestyle or just the role?
Because the two are not the same thing. The role is what someone does on site. The lifestyle is everything that surrounds it. The family adjusting at home. The worker moving between two completely different worlds every few weeks. The organisations that ask that question tend to build cultures that people genuinely want to be part of long term.
If that's a conversation your organisation is having, we'd love to be part of it. Feel free to reach out.

Nobody talks much about the mental load of being a woman on site.
You clock on and you are completely present. The work demands it and you deliver it every single day. But the moment you step off shift the other part of your life is right there waiting. The kids who needed something today. The partner holding things together at home. The family stuff that keeps moving whether you’re there or not.
You manage all of it. From a donga room with limited signal at the end of a 12 hour shift. Without making a big deal of it.
That’s not a small thing. That’s actually extraordinary.
This one is for the women doing both.

There is a particular kind of woman who makes FIFO work.
She shows up on site and does the job completely. Twelve hour shifts, demanding environment, a long way from home. And then she steps off shift and picks up the other part of her life. The kids, the partner, the family stuff that kept moving whether she was there or not.
Or she's the one at home. Holding everything together across weeks of distance, running the household solo, being present for the kids while also carrying her own version of missing someone. And then readjusting all of it when the roster ends and doing it again when it starts.
Some women do both sides at different points in their life. Most of them do it without making a big deal of it.
This one is for all of them.
What's something a woman in your life has done that made you realise just how much she was carrying?

Nobody hands FIFO parents a guide on how to help their kids through a long swing.
You figure it out as you go. You learn what your three year old needs when they're looking for someone who isn't there. You learn how to help your eight year old count sleeps without making the wait feel longer. You learn how to stay genuinely connected to your teenager who acts like everything is fine but you know feels it just as much as everyone else.
Every age is different. Every kid handles it in their own way. But the one thing they all have in common is that they're doing something most kids their age never have to do.
And they're doing it because their family chose a life that asks a lot from everyone in it.
What's something that helped your kids through the distance?

I don't know about anyone else, but I always found week three the hardest. The first week, you're still settling into the swing. Everyone's adjusting and finding their rhythm.
But by week three, you're kind of over it. You're tired of doing everything yourself. You're tired of phone calls that never seem long enough. You're tired of answering ""how many more sleeps?"" for the hundredth time.
Nothing's wrong. You're just ready for them to come home. That's actually one of the reasons we created our Break Boxes.
Not because someone is having a terrible day. Not because it's a special occasion. Just because sometimes getting a surprise in the middle of a long swing can make the week feel a little less repetitive and remind someone they're being thought of.
If you've got someone in your life who's in the thick of a swing right now, a Break Box might be exactly the little pick-me-up they need.

You've thought about sending him something approximately eleven times this swing.
Thought about it on the drive to school. Thought about it when he called and sounded a bit flat. Thought about it at 9pm when you finally sat down and then got distracted by something on Netflix.
And now he's flying home in a week and the moment has passed. Again.
The subscription means you never have to think about it. It just shows up on site every quarter whether you remembered or not. Which, based on recent history, is probably for the best.
One decision and future you will be very grateful. Link in bio.

Most people don’t think twice about a Tuesday night at home.
In a FIFO family, a Tuesday night at home means someone is here. Actually here. Not on a screen, not at the end of a crackly phone call, not being saved up for when the roster ends.
Just here. Making dinner together. Sitting on the couch. Doing nothing in particular.
And you notice it. Every single time. Because you know how quickly the ordinary becomes the thing you miss most.
That’s the part of this lifestyle that’s hard to explain to someone from the outside. The way it changes how you see the small stuff. The way a completely unremarkable Tuesday becomes something you’re quietly grateful for.
What’s the ordinary moment you find yourself appreciating most during home week?

Ask any woman who has spent time on site what support actually meant something to her and she probably won't name the biggest program or the most visible initiative.
She'll name something specific. Something small. Something that showed up in the middle of an ordinary swing and made her feel like someone had genuinely thought about what her day looks like out there.
That's the thing about support that actually lands. It doesn't have to be loud to be felt.
If you're part of an organisation that already has Women in Mining initiatives in place and you're thinking about how to add something more tangible to what you're doing, we'd love to be part of that conversation. Feel free to reach out or visit the link in bio.
