In the ageing population across Western Australia, we see the same neck issues come up again and again:
• Postural overload – years of desk work + phone use
• Joint stiffness (arthritis) – reduced mobility, more aches
• Disc degeneration – less shock absorption over time

Hands-On vs Hands-Off? 🤔
There’s been a growing conversation in rehab about exercise-only treatment vs hands-on physiotherapy.
The truth?
Both have their place. It’s not one or the other.
Here’s when hands-on treatment can be very helpful 👇
🔹 Pain is too high to move well
Manual therapy can help calm symptoms so you can actually start exercising properly.
🔹 Joint stiffness or mobility restrictions
Techniques like joint mobilisation or soft tissue work can restore movement that exercises alone may struggle to achieve early on.
🔹 Muscle guarding or spasm
Hands-on treatment can help relax overactive muscles and improve movement patterns.
🔹 Early stages after injury
When tissues are irritated, hands-on treatment can help settle things while we gradually build strength and control.
🔹 Complex or persistent injuries
Some conditions respond better to a combination of manual therapy + targeted exercise.
But here’s the key thing 👇
💡 Hands-on treatment is not the end goal.
It’s a tool to help get you moving better so you can progress into strengthening, stability and long-term recovery.
