Recent changes in the National Construction Code now require building projects to meet new 7-star energy efficiency standards. This means homes need to achieve a high level of thermal performance from better home design utilising better performing products to reduce energy consumption and create healthier living spaces.
The goal for new home builders and architects is to combine the functionality of these products while fitting with the theme and character of the home and strike a balance between form and function.
Five tips for setting up your project:
• Consider the solar aspect of the plans to manage levels of natural light and ventilation.
• Planning early and establish a base for provisional costs.
• Ensure there is adequate substrate for installation points.
• Electrical plans should show the power feeds for motors.
• Discuss downpipe type and location with your builder.
Case Study: Cottesloe Open Alfresco Area
The Goal: to create a transitional space between the indoor and outdoor entertaining areas for this exposed north facing alfresco deck. Harness the passive heating benefits from the low northern winter sun angles to create a heat-sink during the day and provide shade during the summer months by keeping direct sunlight off the timber deck and the windows yet still allowing good airflow and natural light.
The Plan: Install Louvretec Opening Roof with the louvres spanning east-west and opening to the north and maintain a clean low profile structure in keeping with the home design and solar aspect.
Key Points:
• Louvretec roof louvre profile selected on the basis it needed to span the wide 4500mm openings
• Extra reinforcement were provided by the builder behind the wall cladding to allow for better fixing of the perimeter beams.
• Concrete footing was poured and column with frame installed before the deck was installed.
• Soak wells installed before the deck was installed with one outlet per bay allowed for to each corner
• Power for lighting and the Louvretec motors was provisioned and cabled prior to installation with the electrician returning towards the end of the installation to commission the lights and motors
• Decking installed around the central column
• Louvretec louvres installed and motors tested and programmed
• Job successfully handed over
