More than 150 people gathered at The Deck in Busselton this morning to voice their concerns about potential changes to dog beach areas in the region.

It comes after the City of Busselton proposed changes to 20 beaches, including the permanent prohibition of dogs from eight of them.

The group of locals, dog lovers and beach walkers exchanged ideas and discussed what effect the banning of dogs on some beaches would have on the community.

Many said walking their dogs on the beach provided vital community connection and removing that opportunity would impact their overall wellbeing.

Others emphasised a disappointment in the lack of consultation, awareness and justification for the changes.

Busselton Mayor Phill Cronin, who was in attendance, threw his support behind the group and promised their feedback would be listened to.

“We’ve got more people here than what we would for an annual general meeting,” he said.

“I commend Steve, Emma and Mariah for putting this together and it’s really opened up our eyes to the compassion and the resilience the community has.”
