Last night, I ventured out to Sugarloaf Rock in WA’s southwest for a bit of astrophotography. Didn’t expect much since it’s not the best time of year for it, but I was surprised to capture some incredible red and green airglow! It’s not visible to the naked eye, but the camera sensor picked it up beautifully.
Green airglow comes from oxygen atoms glowing about 90-100 km above Earth, while the red glow comes from higher up—around 150-300 km. Pretty wild what’s happening in our atmosphere, even when we can’t see it!
