A non-Muslim told me an interesting story yesterday. She said she only buys halal chicken and has been doing so for many years. It all started when she was a teenager and used to help the family with marketing. She would walk past the non-Muslim stalls at the wet market selling chicken and she would be terrified, watching in horror as live chickens were dunked into boiling hot water and panicked screaming would come from the chickens. Most of all, it was the distressing noises the chickens made, no doubt frightened of their impending torture, that repulsed her and she resolved not to eat chicken anymore.

Then one day, she took a different route and walked past a Muslim stall selling chickens. She stopped for a while because she didn't hear the usual screams. She saw that the chickens were all neatly in cages. There was the usual clucking but no terrified screams. And no boiling cauldron awaiting the chickens. Everything looked organised and peaceful to her. The name of Allah was pronounced over a chicken, and in a flash, a sharp knife would be used to quickly slaughter the chicken and the deed would be done. No panic, no prolonged painful torture. She was quite amazed, and resolved that she could eat chicken once again as long as she bought from the Muslim stalls. And that's what she has been doing ever since. Whether she buys from the wet market or elsewhere, she makes it point to only buy halal.

Unfortunately, many non-Muslims don't know that halal isn't only no pork, but that for any meat to be halal, the animal needs to be slaughtered in a halal manner. Allah's name is pronounced over it (the life and death of the animal is by and for His Maker) and there must be no torture to the animal. The process should consist of a swift, deep incision with a very sharp knife on the throat, cutting the wind pipe, jugular veins and carotid arteries of both sides but leaving the spinal cord intact. This process also allows the animal's blood to be drained, a healthy practice that expels impurities in the blood prior to our consumption.

Since she was so affected by the screams of the chickens that haunted her for so long, I shared with her that animals can be calmed down into submission when the name of Allah is pronounced over them and told her she could actually find Youtube videos on this. She looked somewhat amazed by this and as I smiled back at her, I felt grateful for yet another beautiful practice that Muslims are blessed with.
