We all seem to be missing that 90s slower pace.
So I sat down with my grandparents to find out if life felt different for them, parenting before technology played a huge role in everyone’s lives.
This is what they said.
………………………………..
Life just felt easier than today. Maybe less overwhelming. We had our struggles, but in different ways. The internet, mobile phones, expensive technology just adds a different layer to what we had to deal with.
We were less available. We didn't check our phones every couple of minutes. Before mobiles, if someone needed you, they left a message on the answering machine and you got it when you got home. Or they wrote you a letter and you waited for it to arrive.
We're always reachable now. Like we are on call 24/7. Always answering a call, replying to a text, checking an email. Always refreshing apps and emails to see if we need to respond.
Conversations weren't interrupted because someone's mobile was ringing.
Now we aren’t always present, we are always a little bit somewhere else.
At school pick-up we weren’t scrolling social media. At night we didn't doom scroll social media.
We didn't deal with meltdowns over iPads or phones.
We weren’t trying to limit screen time or shielding our kids from the horrors that the online world brings.
Life was so much easier and more affordable, there were less things to pay for. We didn't need to pay for 4 million subscriptions just to survive.
We didn’t have tv subscriptions or mobile phone payment plans.
We couldn't spend money and order fast food instantly. We couldn't spend money and buy random things online on a whim.
We were spending less money because social media wasn't there to entice us to buy all the latest things. We had magazines to wow us, but we had to patiently wait for those monthly.
We didn't have school apps to constantly check, the kids sports didn't have apps that we needed to contribute to.
We didn't need a mobile to scan multiple QR codes just to access basic information.
The internet and social media have flooded our brains with information about absolutely everything.
We turn to the internet to google absolutely everything and anything now.
Everything is instant.
Everything is available right this very second.
We've forgotten what it feels like to wait, to save for things, or to have patience.
But it's also made us addicted to being contactable 24/7. We absolutely need our mobile with us all the time.
But we survived just fine without them and with a phone attached to a wall at home.
Technology has its perks, of course. Being contactable has saved lives. But technology, the Internet, social media, has lead to loss of lives too.
