Movie Review: Project Hail Mary is the kind of science-fiction film that reminds you why the genre can be so powerful. Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and starring Ryan Gosling as Ryland Grace, the film delivers a thrilling space adventure wrapped around a deeply human story about courage, friendship, and the will to save humanity.

From the moment Grace wakes up alone on a spacecraft with no memory of who he is or why he’s there, the film hooks you with a compelling mystery. As his memories slowly return, we discover that Grace is not a traditional action hero but a reluctant one, a science teacher thrust into an impossible mission to save Earth. Gosling brings warmth, humour, and vulnerability to the role, making Grace incredibly relatable. His character arc is one of the film’s greatest strengths: watching him evolve from a confused survivor into someone willing to sacrifice everything for the planet is genuinely inspiring.

But the true heart of Project Hail Mary lies in the extraordinary friendship that forms between Grace and Rocky. Rocky, an alien from another star system who is also trying to save his species, could have easily been a gimmick. Instead, the film turns him into one of the most lovable and memorable characters in modern sci-fi.

The scenes where Grace and Rocky learn to communicate are pure cinematic joy. Their gradual understanding of each other, through science, music, and shared problem-solving, creates a bond that feels authentic and surprisingly emotional. What begins as cautious curiosity grows into one of the most touching friendships put on screen in years.

Their relationship is built on mutual respect and trust. Despite being from completely different worlds, they become partners, teachers, and ultimately brothers in a mission far bigger than themselves. The film beautifully shows how intelligence, empathy, and cooperation can bridge even the most unimaginable divides.

Visually, the film delivers stunning depictions of space travel and alien environments, but it never lets spectacle overshadow the story. At its core, Project Hail Mary is about hope. 10/10 recommend watching in cinema.
