Part 2 - Launch of 'Requiem for the ‘Australian Dream” - Sergio Famiano
UDF is proud to join in the launch of 'Requiem for the ‘Australian Dream’’ by leading local planner and author Sergio Famiano. Planners are being blamed for the housing affordability crisis but are often left out of the public discussion. Hear from a planner who has taken the time to document the broader issues and explain the planner's role in the solutions.
Sergio Famiano is the author of ‘The New Australian Dream – Rethinking our homes and cities to solve the housing crisis’, published in 2022. The book examines the origins of the Australian Dream of home ownership, Australia’s love affair with the house and block with a car and the ‘growing shadows’ that have emerged with suburban living and its transformation of Australian cities from the 1950’s onwards. In his latest book – ‘Requiem for the Australian Dream’, Sergio examines the birth of the ‘Australian Dream’ of home ownership under Menzies, to its death in the 2000s. Requiem for the ‘Australian Dream’ examines the historical elements and varied government policies and pure greed that turned the Australian Dream of home ownership into a nightmare. The book takes a proactive dive into the roots of the crisis, and offers feasible solutions going forward to ensure affordable home ownership can again become a right for future generations of Australians.
