Spotify has announced a major AI initiative with Sony, Universal, Warner, and Believe, promising “artist-first” tools that give musicians control over how their work is used in AI-generated music.
But behind the marketing, this marks a turning point: AI is becoming unavoidable in music, and Spotify intends to lead that shift.
For artists, it’s both an opportunity and a risk. AI can help creators experiment, reach new audiences, and innovate—but it also strengthens the platform’s power over how music is used, licensed, and monetised.
Entertainment lawyer Sarah Jennings notes:
“AI isn’t optional anymore. Artists need to secure their copyright and define how their work can be used—before platforms do it for them.”
If you’re a musician or producer, now is the time to take control:
• Register your copyrights.
• Clarify AI permissions in contracts.
• Stay informed on how streaming platforms are using AI.
AI will shape the next era of music. The artists who understand their rights—and act early—will be the ones who stay in control.
