Amongst an inbox full of emails everyday … sometimes you get one that just makes your day. Whilst as a surgeon we strive to have great outcomes and happy patients … we sometimes underestimate, and indeed sometimes forget the impact we have on patients, their families and friends. The focus is often about technical outcomes, clinical success, primary patency, and complication rates … when sometimes it should be a meal with friends and smiles on faces. The technical success is intellectually satisfying but it is real world outcomes like this that “fill my cup”. Severe mesenteric angina with coeliac and superior mesenteric artery occlusions causing severe weight loss and food avoidance due to pain treated with endovascular stenting after 12 months symptoms. Second operation is incidentally found large aortic aneurysm.

It is not often you get the privilege to look after a bona fide war hero at Hollywood Private Hospital. Lt John O’Halloran is an extraordinary gentleman that led Australia’s most decorated platoon during the Vietnam war through some of its most difficult days. He even signed my copy of his book. The strength, grit, courage and absolute determination of men like John are a lesson to us all. (With permission).

Remembrance Day. Today we pause to remember the courage, sacrifice, and legacy of those who served.
Lest we forget. 🌺 I had the privilege of being given one of the most amazing and cherished gifts from a grateful patient (a retired Australian Army archivist from her private collection) a few months ago of a ANZAC Rising Sun Hat badge she found in excavations at Shrapnel Gully from the Gallipoli campaign. This badge was warn in combat over 100 years ago on hallowed ground and is caked in that mud … I will always be in awe of this gift and the sacrifice it represents.

In the midst of a pretty average week, sometimes a little kindness and thought can brighten your day … a beautiful piece of 1919 Northwood antique Carnival glass as an amazing gift from a very grateful patient … totally unexpected, very appreciated and well timed.
