The Aurora never gets old!

I’m back from my trip to Lofoten, where conditions for ‘conventional’ photography more akin to what you’d expect from this place were difficult to say the least. Spring like temps and blazing blue skies meant for tricky daytime shooting, but that meant by night the aurora was given plenty of opportunity to shine due to the lack of cloud. The expected stormy/transient weather never appeared for 10 days, and the normally moody coastline never got much livelier than a mill pond.

During the trip I probably shot the northern lights maybe 5-6 times and came away with some images I was really happy with, regularly shooting from 8pm to 1/2am. It’s certainly a draining way to shoot though and not something I’d probably like to get into the habit of!

Everything I shot was extensively scouted during the daytime as anyone who does this will know that trying to compose a decent foreground in the pitch dark even with a head torch is an absolute nightmare without some element of pre-planning.

This was one of my favourite aurora images mainly due to the shape of the aurora in this scene - after getting some decent ones in the bag it’s amazing how quickly you start getting picky with how the thing looks!
