There is no place in Australia for hatred of any kind, and everyone should be able to enjoy their life without prejudice or discrimination.

If you experience or witness hate, don’t put up with it; speak up.

There are steps you can take to help counter hate:

📞 Stay safe
In an emergency or life-threatening situation, call Triple Zero (000) and ask for police.

⚠️ Report the incident
By reporting incidents, you become part of a larger movement to remove hate, racism and prejudice from our society. Reporting also allows authorities to understand patterns of behaviour in local areas to maintain your safety. Many reporting options are available to you:
- Australian Human Rights Commission (AHRC)
- State and territory anti-discrimination commissions
- Local Councils
- Office of the eSafety Commissioner
- Community-led registers

💬 Speak up
- When people who witness hate, racism or prejudice speak out against it, this act makes the person being targeted feel supported. It can make the person being hateful reconsider their behaviour. Don’t put yourself at risk, but if it is safe to do so, speak up and stand with the victim. Even a simple gesture can be powerful.

Today marks International Day for Countering Hate Speech, which is an opportunity to learn about what you can do to make a difference in Australia to combat hate.

To coincide with the launch of Mental Health Week, which runs from 7 to 14 October, we are proud to release our new Western Australian Mental Wellbeing Guide (Mental Wellbeing Guide) today.

The Mental Wellbeing Guide was developed after extensive consultation with government, non-government, private and community organisations, as well as representatives from the lived experience sector.

It aims to:
• improve understanding of the term “mental wellbeing” and how it impacts and interacts with both mental health and physical health
• identify factors that impact on mental wellbeing.
• provide practical examples of activities that can increase or maintain mental wellbeing
• encourage evaluation and research of mental wellbeing programs to build evidence about effective strategies.

You can download a copy of the Mental Wellbeing Guide from our website -https://www.mhc.wa.gov.au/media/4747/mental-wellbeing-guide.pdf
