You can't really force a young man to open up. Anyone who's tried knows that. The harder you push the conversation, the faster it shuts down.

So we don't push. We put a game in front of everyone instead. Someone's guessing, a few of the guys are acting it out, and the pressure to "be social" disappears completely because everyone's just focused on the game.

And then the part we love happens. The game ends and the conversation keeps rolling. They learned something about each other in the chaos, and that becomes the thing they keep talking about.

That's social confidence getting built without anyone realising it's happening.

A bit of a throwback to when the weather was actually decent enough to want to be outside. Hard to picture right now, freezing as it is.

Two of the guys spent the afternoon at the park hitting a shuttlecock back and forth. A few good rallies, plenty of shocking hits, and a lot of laughing at the shocking hits.

But the badminton was never really the point. When you are standing side by side doing something with your hands, the pressure to perform a conversation disappears. You are just playing, and the talking happens on its own. That is when the guard comes down and they start chatting freely about whatever is actually going on for them. In our experience that is where the good stuff lives, and it is a huge part of what these days are for.

You'd think watching a movie is a quiet activity. It is not.

Put a group of young men in front of a film and you get a full running commentary. Plot holes flagged in real time, the ending predicted out loud, someone insisting they called the twist twenty minutes ago. And honestly that's the good part. The movie is almost an excuse.

What's actually happening is a bunch of young men comfortable enough with each other to talk over a screen together. For a lot of them, getting to that kind of easy took a while.

This doesn't look like much. A young man sitting at a table, writing something out on paper. Not exactly the kind of thing you'd stop and photograph.

But this is what independence actually looks like most of the time. It's not the big dramatic milestone. It's the boring stuff. The lists, the forms, the little bits of admin you've probably been quietly doing for him for years, because it was faster and easier to just handle it yourself.

The thing is, every time he sorts one of these little jobs out himself, that's one less thing he needs you for down the track. And that adds up quicker than you'd think.
