Professional Historians Association (WA) Inc is deeply saddened at the loss of Michael Nind. Michael was a founding member of PHA (WA) in 1989 and a fierce advocate for the importance of archives and record keeping. He began researching and writing Western Australian history in 1978 and forged a long and successful career in the public service.
Michael's contributions to the collections at State Archives, Battye Library, Department of Energy, Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety, and Department of Land Administration were immense. He regarded his work on archiving land records before the department moved from central Perth out to Midland as his most significant professional achievement.
In addition to his career in State Government, Michael served on numerous history committees and held positions on many professional organisations. His strength of character, passion for archives and WA history, combined with his warm and congenial regard for history colleagues never wavered despite health challenges over many years.
Michael's last words to several PHA members were not about his failing health but advocating for archives and challenging us all to continue our work. We acknowledge the loss of a history champion and well-respected colleague.
