The Dawn Service Tradition: The first dawn service was held in Australia by a former chaplain, the Reverend John Linton, in 1927 on the foreshore of Sydney’s Coogee Beach. It mimicked the original landing time at Gallipoli and has become a staple of ANZAC Day commemorations.

Poppies and Rosemary: Poppies, inspired by the battlefields of World War I, are worn as a remembrance emblem. In Australia and New Zealand, sprigs of rosemary—a native herb that grows on many Gallipoli battlefields—are also laid or worn.

ANZAC Biscuit Origin: The ANZAC biscuit was created to send to soldiers overseas because its ingredients (oats, flour, sugar, golden syrup) kept well without spoiling or going rancid. Wives and mothers baked and sent them as care packages.
