It's interesting that Fipronil is banned in Europe, because it not only kills all insects that come into contact with it (bees, butterflies, moths, bugs) but because it has a way of getting into drinking water after rain and becoming a major toxin for humans too.
Fipronil is being used by NSW DPI to eliminate varroa mite in NSW feral honeybee populations, by killing all wild bees (native or non native) within a 500m radius of baiting stations. It will also kill any wild pollinators. Birds, fish, lizards and mammals who eat these poisoned insects will also be subject to poisoning.
There are reports that Fipronil is already showing up in local water testing.
My question is, is pressure being applied to government by the Australian Honeybee Industry Council (a highly funded group that lobbies for legislation to protect multi-million dollar exports) to kill all pollinators, poison waterways and kill local marine life and fauna, just to protect NSW honeybee exports?
