First Blog Post in a series titled, 'Let's Talk School':
#1: Encourage Independence in your child.... and make sure the teachers sees this!
A simple way to do this is to let your child carry their own school bag, lunch box and overcoat as soon as they are physically able to do so, safely. It is not considered to be kind or helpful when you do things for your child, that they can easily do for themselves. It’s not considered ‘nurturing’ either.
What professionals see is a parent who doesn’t understand the important role of the quality of ‘independence’ in their child’s development. This single act of carrying everything for your child, can undermine their confidence in themselves to believe in their own capabilities.
Obviously, this one act of carry everything is not an actual problem in itself, but it very often indicates to teachers, that this parent is doing many other things for their children, that they could reasonably be expected to do for themselves.
In parent interviews, if the teacher says something to you, along the lines of: ‘We are noticing that at times, your child struggles with independence’, it means that the teacher is seeing a lack of independence in the classroom. It actually means that your child is not showing their capability to do things that most of the other children would normally do for themselves.
