This new approach to wastewater treatment uses microbubbles and nanobubbles to remove more than 90% of microplastic pollution before it enters waterways. 🫧

While the process, known as dissolved air flotation is widely uses in water treatment, RMIT researches found that plastic removal rates increased when both microbubbles and nanobubbles were used together, outperforming standard systems that rely on a single bubble type. 💧

The dual-bubble approach can be adopted by wastewater treatment plants without major infrastructure changes by optimising existing operating conditions, including air pressure, saturation time and bubble size. 🚰

A new tool that combines AI with medical expertise is being used to help clinicians monitor trends in serious fungal infections in cancer patients.

Cancer patients are prone to fungal infections because cancer, and many cancer treatments, weaken the body’s normal immune defences. Invasive fungal infections often lead to death and place a significant cost burden on the healthcare system.

Developed in collaboration between RMIT University, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, the University of Melbourne, Royal Melbourne Hospital and BioGrid, the new tool, called EINSTEIN AI, will allow for the automatic detection of infections in vulnerable patients.

Using electronically recorded information about patients (e.g. reports on pathology tests and CT scans), EINSTEIN AI reads reports, looking for clues that can help join the dots in the data.

The tool aims to give medical teams greater situational awareness, allowing for more prompt and better-informed medical care.
