A remarkable researcher, clinician and human being whose impact will be felt for generations to come. Professor Richard Scolyer’s courage, generosity and dedication to improving outcomes for people with cancer inspired so many. Our thoughts are with his loved ones and all those whose lives he touched. 💜
We are deeply saddened by the passing of Professor Richard Scolyer AO over the weekend - an extraordinary clinician, researcher and advocate whose impact on cancer care will be felt for generations.
Richard was a world-leading melanoma pathologist, researcher and clinician whose work transformed the understanding and treatment of melanoma, helping improve outcomes for patients in Australia and around the world. He was admired not only for his brilliance, but for his generosity, compassion and unwavering commitment to better care for people with cancer.
Following his diagnosis with an aggressive brain cancer, Richard faced his illness with remarkable courage and openness. He turned his diagnosis into an opportunity to help others – part of a world-first experimental immunotherapy approach that applied lessons from melanoma treatment to glioblastoma.
His willingness to share his journey helped accelerate research and gave hope to patients and families facing one of the most devastating cancers.
We were honoured to welcome Richard to Peter Mac last year, where he met with our clinicians and researchers. Even while navigating his own diagnosis, he remained deeply committed to pushing science forward - generously sharing insights, championing collaboration and continuing to work tirelessly to improve outcomes for future patients.
Our thoughts are with Richard’s family, friends, colleagues and the many patients, researchers and clinicians whose lives he touched.
Vale Professor Richard Scolyer.

Imagine surviving cancer without losing so much along the way. For Ada, that meant losing her leg.
Diagnosed with osteosarcoma at just 18, Ada had no idea what was to come. After undergoing nine months of chemotherapy, the conversation turned to surgery: amputating her leg above the knee to protect her long-term future.
💬 “No one wants to lose their limbs, but if it’s to reduce the cancer coming back... that’s how I thought of it”, she says.
Today, Ada wears her pink and blue prosthetic with pride. But what if treatment didn’t have to take so much from people in the first place?
Immunotherapy offers that possibility. Researchers at Peter Mac are exploring how to harness it for rare cancers like osteosarcoma — complex work that relies on sustained support.
⭐ Because gentler treatments don’t just save lives. They protect futures.
