What all mothers must know about their babies...

A baby's emotional development begins long before birth. During pregnancy, the mother's physical and emotional wellbeing influences the environment in which the baby grows. When a mother experiences ongoing stress, anxiety, fear, or depression, her body produces stress hormones such as cortisol. While occasional stress is a normal part of life and is unlikely to cause harm, prolonged or severe stress may affect the developing baby's nervous system and influence how the child responds to stress after birth.

The bond between mother and baby continues after birth through touch, eye contact, voice, and emotional connection. Babies are highly sensitive to their caregiver's emotional state. If a mother is consistently overwhelmed, emotionally unavailable, or distressed, the baby may become more likely to develop heightened stress responses or difficulties with emotional regulation. This does not mean the baby permanently "absorbs" the mother's emotions, but rather that early experiences can shape emotional development.

As the child grows, repeated exposure to an environment of fear, conflict, or emotional instability may contribute to beliefs about safety, trust, and self-worth. These early patterns can influence relationships, confidence, and emotional resilience later in life. However, they are not fixed. The brain remains adaptable throughout life, and supportive relationships, therapy, nurturing care, and positive experiences can help reshape emotional patterns.

It is important to recognise that many factors influence a child's emotional development, including genetics, the involvement of other caregivers, family relationships, nutrition, and the broader environment. A mother's emotional struggles do not determine a child's future. Many children raised during difficult circumstances grow into emotionally healthy adults, especially when they receive love, stability, and support from caring people around them.
