Australians are being warned over terrorist organisations exploiting the public’s goodwill by disguising themselves as charities to receive donations to fund terror activities.

The AFP-led Joint Threat Financing Group (JTFG) is aware of terrorist actors and terrorist organisations potentially falsifying credentials to deceive vulnerable donors into sending money offshore.

Providing funds to, from or on behalf a terrorist organisation is an offence under Australian law that carries a maximum penalty of 25 years’ imprisonment.

Australians can protect themselves by ensuring they are donating to an established and registered charity that is running a verified appeal. To check this, visit the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC) charity register at: www.acnc.gov.au/charity/charities

If you suspect a charity or humanitarian group asking for donations is illegitimate, call the National Security Hotline on 1800 123 400.

A warning to all Australians about the rise of scams

Ruthless scammers are using brazen new techniques to drain the banking and cryptocurrency accounts of everyday Australians.

Now, the AFP-led Joint Policing Cybercrime Coordination Centre (JPC3) is lifting the lid on the bold tactics of the scamming playbook.

Scammers approach victims armed and ready using secure information such as their name, date of birth, account details, and bank balances, acquired through other cyber-attacks or data breaches.

Common stories used in bank impersonation scams to get victims to act quickly include:

• Pending unauthorised payments which can only be reversed or cancelled once banking details or codes are shared;

• Locked bank accounts that can only be unlocked if you act now;

• New payees added to your bank account; and

• Compromised devices or accounts where money or cryptocurrency needs to be moved to a ‘safe account’ to be protected.

Once scammers have got your attention, they may:

• Send one-time passwords and ask you to verify the code;

• Request your banking passwords or personal details to verify your identity;

• Request remote access to your computer;

• Ask you to approve transactions in the bank’s app;

• Ask you to withdraw cash from the bank and for a courier to collect for safekeeping;

• Ask you to open new accounts, move money to a “safe account” or another bank; and

• Ask you to make payments via a “bank-linked” or socially engineered platform.
