“So many strings, holding us together.”🌌

The specialness of these improvised Moment shows is hard to describe in language. I never thought I’d get to push my freestyle lyricism/songwriting to this extent in a way that feels so generous and alive.

Shouts to these wizards continuously blowing my mind while crafting deep pockets and sending intention and love through the music:

It’s all one big freestyle, I’m trying to embrace the intended punchlines that land, with the happy accidents as well as the pauses between beats. Music is always a medicine and we need it… More improvised moments coming this year.

“I never thought hip hop would take it this far.”

This year I had the opportunity to collaborate with the Australian Art Orchestra (AAO) to explore freestyle rap and composition in a whole new, live ensemble context.

Blending classical, jazz and film score arrangements with improvised play, storytelling, narration and freestyle rap was a creative affirmation and personal inspiration. Child state joy was the theme of the month.

‘To Kill A Magic We Got Used To’ (TKAM) was the title of this new work that I’m very excited to continue exploring and touring with the creative force of and AAO ensemble of unbelievably talented musicians.

For this new work I got to utilise my love for scriptwriting to create a world with Aaron Choulai on music, that told a fable about the delirious delights and deeply destructive aspects of the modern music industry-social media complex, and a general shout out to the greater myths of ‘gaining the world, but at what cost’.

I have always been excited by the unexplored applications of freestyle rap and improvised songwriting to connect in an immediate, undeniable way. The vulnerability of each performance contains the potential to hook even non-rap audiences and gain entry into the human heart with unprecedented permission to heal, challenge beliefs, share perspective and bring the invisible essentials of life to light.

As I played each rehearsal with the AAO, and the premiere performance, I felt a sense of identifying a part of artistic self/curiosity that hadn’t made sense until those particular moments. I still feel a deep joy to be part of thus work that explored such fresh ways of telling stories.

Thanks to each person near or far who follows and supports my journey with freestyle rap, song and poetry. I love each project I’m part of and collaboration around improvised music is always the secret sauce for opening portals to new worlds. For those feeling like there’s more to what they’re seeing/hearing/reading in their area of interest, remember: the map is not the territory, so go for it and keep exploring.

I am beyond stoked to see what new musical and narrative worlds can be discovered and shared in 2026.

I’m genuinely thrilled with how meaningful, growing and inspiring 2024 has been in regards to new opportunities for workshops, keynotes and creative collaborations in general. This feedback from a recent workshop tops it off brilliantly, and looking forward to 2025. Safe holidays to all!
