Important Update: Changes to the Subclass 407 Training Visa (Effective 11 March 2026)

From today, 11 March 2026, the validity requirements for the Subclass 407 Training Visa have been updated under the Migration Amendment (Training Visas—Sponsorship Requirements) Regulations 2026.

Previously, applicants could lodge the Temporary Activities Sponsorship application, Training Nomination, and the visa application concurrently. However, this is no longer permitted under the updated regulations.

Under the new rules, a valid Subclass 407 visa application can only be lodged once the following approvals are already in place:

• The sponsoring organisation must already be an approved Temporary Activities Sponsor
• The training nomination must be approved for the occupational training program
• The visa application must reference the approved nomination at the time of lodgement

This means that applicants and employers can no longer submit sponsorship, nomination, and visa applications at the same time. Both the sponsorship and nomination approvals must now occur before the visa application is lodged.

The Department of Home Affairs has indicated that these changes aim to strengthen the integrity of the Subclass 407 program and ensure it is used for genuine occupational training purposes.

What this means in practice:
• Employers must plan training programs earlier
• Applicants may face longer lead times before visa lodgement
• Careful visa planning is essential, especially for those already in Australia with expiring visas
