😃 How to Get a Genuine Smile in Your Headshot (Even If You Hate Photos!!)

If you’ve ever stood in front of a camera thinking, “Please don’t let me look awkward…” or "I hate getting my photo taken"... — you’re not alone.

At ProfileBooth, we’ve photographed thousands of professionals, and the #1 thing people worry about is their smile.

So here are our simple, proven tips to get a natural, confident and genuinely warm smile every time:

😊 1. Think of someone that makes you happy (or a "happy" place).
- It sounds cheesy, but it works. Thinking of a friend, partner, or even your dog softens your expression instantly. Or a holiday where you were happy and relaxed.

😄 2. Smile with the eyes first.
- A genuine smile starts with the eyes. If your eyes aren’t involved, it can become a forced “photo smile.” Relax the face, then let the smile come up from the eyes and follow.

🫶 3. Take a breath out, not in 🌬️
- Most people inhale before the shutter clicks — which tightens the face.
A slow exhale relaxes your jaw and helps your smile look natural.

🤝 4. Let us do the work.
- Our photographers use prompts, jokes, relaxed discussion and micro-adjustments to help the real you show up. All you have to do is stand there — we’ll take care of the vibe.

😎 5. Aim for “friendly confidence,” not a big cheesy grin.
- You don’t need an oversized smile. A small, relaxed “I’m approachable” expression is often more professional and genuine.

Whether you're refreshing your LinkedIn, updating your company website, or getting ready for your first ProfileBooth session — these little cues can make a big difference.

A natural smile isn’t about posing. It’s about feeling comfortable — and that’s our job.
