Record of the day: Curt Cress - Avanti (1983 German pressing). After cutting his teeth behind the skins for outfits like Krautrockers Orange Peel and master drummer Klaus Weiss' Passport project, Curt picked up a Simmons electronic kit to supplement his array of acoustic drums and timbales when the 80s hit and set about adding a space-y dimension to his sound. The fifteen-time German drummer of the year shows his ability in flashy-but-tasteful flourishes, but he also never forgets the importance of the groove. Taste-makers, Music From Memory, loved this record so much they included three of the tracks from it alongside their reissue of Curt's house-influenced 1992 single, "Dschung Tek". I've been enjoying Gorillaz' Eastern tinged ninth album, 'The Mountain', of late. It's a return to the cartoon band's glory days and feels like their most complete album since 'Plastic Beach', with a guest list that takes in Idles, Sparks, a bunch of Indian musicians including Anoushka Shankar, Asha Bhosle and Asha Puthli, plus past collaborators from beyond the grave - Dennis Hopper, Mark E Smith, Bobby Womack and Tony Allen. It's a fairly subdued set too, centered around grief and loss, that gives 'The Mountain' a deep emotional core. Then Omar Souleyman and Yasiin Bey (That's Mos Def to you, buddy) turn up and you'll dance 'til dawn. - Joe

You wait 24 years for a copy of The Warlocks' Phoenix album and two turn up at the same time... Former Brian Jonestown member Bobby Hecksher and his crew created their finest set in two separate flavours- the original US gatefold gets a trippy cover and a single disc and the UK double disc version swaps out two tracks. Either way, the album is one of the greatest neo-psych sets of the era, easily matching the best of BJM, BRMC or The Black Angels. Sonic Boom turns up as well. What a trip! - Joe
