“It’s about protecting communities and it’s about using the tools and powers across government and within the private sector to combat all forms of money laundering and terrorism financing.”

The Financial Action Task Force, or FATF, has been called the most important body you’ve never heard of. Yet its standards underpin Australia’s AML/CTF reforms and the new Tranche 2 obligations facing lawyers from 1 July 2026.

In this episode, KPMG’s Tim Goodrick explains why FATF was created, how Australia moved from early leader to compliance laggard, and why routine legal work in property, trusts, companies and client onboarding now matters to financial crime prevention.

The conversation also covers customer due diligence, beneficial ownership, suspicious matter reporting, legal professional privilege and the practical steps firms should take now.

Coercive control doesn’t always look like violence, but it can be just as dangerous.

For many victim-survivors, the signs are subtle, cumulative and often missed. In many cases, a lawyer is the first person they turn to, creating a critical opportunity to recognise risk early.

New national training developed by Women’s Legal Service Victoria, First Nations Advocates Against Family Violence, Women’s Legal Services Australia and National Legal Aid is now available to help lawyers identify, respond and support clients safely.

As highlighted by Monica Blizzard of KHQ Lawyers, coercive control is often revealed through patterns of behaviour over time, not single incidents.
