I finished This is Not a Lie yesterday, and I honestly wasn't expecting it to hit me as hard as it did. Set against Melbourne's 1980s rock scene, it captures the excitement of chasing fame while never shying away from the emotional cost of living behind a carefully constructed mask. I found myself completely invested in Joel's journey, especially as he wrestles with addiction, identity, and the impossible pressure of protecting the life he's built.

One thing I really appreciated was how authentic the atmosphere felt. The music scene, the band dynamics, and the emotional tension all came across as believable rather than overdramatic. Harry's arrival shifts everything in subtle but powerful ways, and I liked that the relationships developed naturally instead of feeling rushed. The story also balances darker themes with genuine moments of vulnerability, making the characters feel like real people rather than stereotypes.

There were a couple of moments where I wished the pacing had slowed just a little to let certain emotional scenes breathe, which is why this lands at 4.5 stars instead of a full five for me. Still, the writing kept pulling me back, and I ended up reading far later than I'd planned because I needed to know what happened next.

If you enjoy character-driven stories with emotional depth, LGBTQ+ themes, music, and flawed but deeply human characters, I'd definitely recommend giving this one a try. It isn't always an easy read, but it's an honest and memorable one that stayed with me after the final page.
