I’ve noticed many wonderful Deaf social media influencers, especially those who teach Auslan, are not receiving enough attention, followers, or likes. In contrast, hearing social media influencers teaching Auslan—often without respect for Deaf culture—are gaining high follower counts and engagement.

This isn’t about competition or jealousy; I genuinely want to understand why this is happening. Why are people following hearing Auslan tutors who may not be fluent, disregard Deaf culture, and ignore requests from the Deaf community to stop teaching?

Deaf individuals are often undervalued and overlooked. We work twice as hard and put in longer hours as social media influencers, adding captions and transcripts, while hearing individuals can simply speak and finish their content in a fraction of the time.

It feels like profit is being made off our language. By following hearing influencers, you risk learning from individuals who lack true involvement in the Deaf community. Some hearing Auslan tutors charge $250 per hour, or even $450 per person workshops, while Deaf instructors—who have signed their entire lives and are deeply connected to the community—often charge only half of that.

I’m calling this out because I’m fed up. I’m tired of frauds, scammers, and unethical influencers damaging Auslan and profiting from our language. Save your money and choose to follow and learn from Deaf people. 👍 Edit: the question is directly AT followers that following hearing Auslan social media influencers? WHY are you following them and not a Deaf Social media influencers 😑
