Reddit, Acronyms and Recruitment: Are We Speaking the Same Language?

If you have ever fallen down a Reddit rabbit hole, you will know it has a language of its own. AMA. TL;DR. OP. ELI5. IYKYK.

At first glance, it can feel like code. But once you understand the acronyms, the conversation suddenly makes sense.

Recruitment can be very similar.

Hiring managers, recruiters and candidates often use industry language without realising not everyone is speaking the same language.

A candidate might say they want “flexibility”, but does that mean work from home, flexible start times, compressed hours or genuine autonomy?

A client might say they need someone “hands-on”, but does that mean operational, technical, proactive, or willing to roll their sleeves up in a small team?

A job ad might ask for someone “commercial”, “strategic” or “fast-paced”, but without context those words can mean ten different things.

That is where good recruitment matters.

It is not just about matching a resume to a job description. It is about translating the language on both sides.

What does the business really need?
What does the candidate really want?
What do the acronyms, assumptions and buzzwords actually mean in practice?

Like Reddit, recruitment works best when everyone understands the conversation. Because when the language is clear, expectations are clearer, decisions are better, and the right people are far more likely to land in the right roles.

So, next time you hear recruitment jargon being thrown around, maybe ask for the ELI5 version.

Sometimes the simplest explanation is the one that leads to the best outcome.

Yesterday marked the Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year.

The recruitment world often feels like a mix of long and short days.

Some days are short on candidates. Some days are long on follow-ups. Some days are filled with interviews, reference checks, client updates and market mapping. And some days feel like you are doing everything right, but the outcome is still taking its time.

Recruitment is rarely instant. It is about consistency, timing and knowing that every conversation can move the process forward.

For employers, the “short days” are often when the market feels tight and good candidates are hard to reach.

For candidates, the “long days” can be when you are waiting to hear back from a job application or an interview.

The good news? After the shortest day, the light starts to return.

And in recruitment, momentum often builds the same way, slowly at first, then all at once. So, whether its a long day or a short day, it's good to remember that change is around the corner.
