Found a baby bird? Here’s what to do 🐣

During this time of year in Darwin, we often see well-meaning people bring baby birds straight into the clinic. Before you do, there are a few important steps that can really help give them the best chance 💚

🐦 If the chick is uninjured:
• Look for the nest nearby- if you can safely reach it, gently place the chick back in
• If the nest has fallen or been destroyed, you can make a simple make-shift nest (small container with drainage holes, lined with leaves or similar) and secure it in the same tree or close by

👀 Then step back and watch
Parent birds are usually close and will often return within a few hours, even if people have touched the chick.

🚫 Please don’t bring baby birds straight to the clinic unless:
• They are injured
• You’ve watched for several hours and the parents haven’t returned
• The bird is in immediate danger (cats, dogs, traffic)

Bringing healthy chicks into care too quickly can actually reduce their chances of survival. Giving parents the opportunity to care for them is almost always the best way to improve their chances

If you’re unsure, give us, or one of the friendly local wildlife carers a call for advice on your specific situation
